You don't actually know what secret tech a faction has until you see them use it. You get all your race's stuff, along with the tech tree for your secret tech. You pick a race and a secret tech (sort of how AoW3 combined races and classes). So now you get a primary and secondary weapon along with three mods. Less slots, but seems to be more ability based. So you've got less individual cities and more focused power bases that basically control large territories (so the map isn't just flooded with countless cities). Each colony can then exploit neighboring sectors (you also can't place a colony in a sector next to one with a colony in it). You colonize a sector (similar to how Endless Legend works) and get access to all that's in it. Cities aren't single expanding tiles anymore. Some of the main differences (beyond the sci-fi setting of course): Just made a couple of leaders and messed about in the early campaign.
